The M-1951 Field Parka, a quintessential piece of cold-weather gear used by the U.S. military from the post-Korean War era through the early Vietnam War. Among the many M-51 parkas available, this set—from a very interesting 1960s production lot—possesses a unique charm. Both items are size SMALL.

When people think of M51 parkas, they generally picture those manufactured in the 1950s, but this item is a rare piece produced in the 1960s, just before the Vietnam War.A distinctive feature is the use of glossy, olive-colored oval buttons—the same type adopted for early Vietnam War gear such as the 1st Model Jungle Fatigue—rather than the flat brown buttons commonly found on many M51 parkas.

This detail is unique to the transitional period between the M51 and M65, and is sure to pique the interest of collectors who have seen numerous examples of this model.

Another noteworthy feature is the size marking. While many M51 parkas have sizes indicated solely by a stamped mark, this piece retains a white fabric tag typical of the 1960s. This detail evokes the production context of the transitional period, making this not just a piece of cold-weather gear but an item of historical significance as well.

The included liner is also size SMALL. It is in excellent condition and effectively delivers the parka’s original warmth. The number of surviving examples with liners is decreasing year by year, making the fact that this is an original set with both the shell and liner a major attraction.

The silhouette features the M51’s signature loose fishtail style. This highly refined design served as the prototype for the later M65 parka and remains extremely popular even in today’s fashion scene.

This is a rare M51 parka set featuring details unique to that transitional period, symbolizing U.S. military gear on the eve of the Vietnam War.
